Abstract

We explored social studies teachers’ dispositions towards working with immigrant students in an Atlantic new gateway state. We surveyed 99 middle and high school social studies teachers using the additive versus subtractive models as a theoretical framework. Although teachers’ professional backgrounds and school contexts were connected to teaching inclusively, their academic expectations of immigrant students, their beliefs on assimilation (regarding schools’ and teachers’ roles in maintaining heritage cultures and languages), and their opinions on the effective implementation of school policies concerning immigrant students’ learning were significant contributors to teaching inclusiveness.

Abstract

This paper examines the effects of immigration, urban residency, poverty, and race/ethnicity on the education of students in K-12 school. Findings of this study critiques the gaps between NCLB policy and its implementations as well as the outcomes, and makes several recommendations. This chapter recommends multiple standards and assessment approaches for accountability. The author believes that accountability must be addressed along with, equality, and fiscal adequacy. Accountability can work in a pluralistic nation only when diversity is taken into serious consideration. Recognizing this diversity is critical in developing successful strategies and effective approaches for working with immigrant families and students. Education policy for disadvantaged families and communities should not be limited to conventional education policy alone. Socioeconomic policies that benefit lower-income families and communities also should be recognized as educational policies on behalf of children.

Tawannah G. Allen, EdD has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology and a Masters of Education in Communication Disorders, both from North Carolina Central University, in Durham, North Carolina. Tawannah practiced as a speech-language pathologist for 10 years after having student taught and taught Kindergarten in Durham Public Schools. Her degree in School Administration was obtained from Fayetteville State University, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Ms. Allen earned her Doctorate in Education in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research interests include resiliency and the African American male and African American women in leadership. She continues to conduct research in the area of African American males and academic success, while also presenting at conferences and professional development trainings. Currently, Dr. Allen is employed with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) as the Director of Elementary Programming and Professional Development. In this position, she is responsible for the articulation, implementation, and monitoring of the elementary instructional programming for nine elementary schools, while also identifying and providing quality professional development for the teachers, principals, and other administrators within the CHCCS district. Dr. Allen's professional goals include becoming an assistant superintendent in a small urban district and then ultimately becoming a superintendent.

Abstract

This article reviews and discusses issues in the translation of international brand names to Chinese, and provides a framework for international brand managers who want to expand into China. Linguistic differences between Chinese and English are wide and deep, making translation of brand names difficult. Cultural context, pronunciation, written vs. oral language, and the meaning of characters are just a few examples of such difficulties. We discuss four global product‐naming strategic alternatives available to country/brand managers, along with their usage. The four approaches include (1) dual extension, (2) brand meaning extension, (3) brand feeling extension, and (4) dual adaptation. We also provide examples of brands utilizing the different approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

Since China’s “opening-up” in the late 1970s, Singapore has played a major role in enhancing China’s engagement with the world, especially in economic terms. This traditional relationship is well manifested in the third government-to-government (G–G) project under the BRI, which is known as the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative (CCI). The purpose of this paper is to address the following question: despite Singapore’s initial reluctance to agree on a third G–G project with China, why did Singapore eventually decide to join the CCI?

Design/methodology/approach

This paper draws on archives of over 700 Chinese language media reports and over 400 English language media reports, as well as private interactions with scholars interested in Sino-Singapore relations and with both sides’ officials in charge of the CCI project.

Findings

The paper finds that it is the goal of connecting the region, along with the need to maintain Singapore’s relevance to China and the regional economy that led to Singapore’s participation in the third G–G project. This paper also uses this case to analyse the changes that are taking place in the bilateral economic relations.

Originality/value

Despite wide media coverage, op-ed commentaries and respective government statements, there are a limited number of academic studies on the rationale of the third G–G project and contemporary Sino-Singapore relations in the literature. The scholarship has not addressed the rationale for Singapore’s changing attitude towards CCI and the manner in which the CCI has improved cooperation (or upgraded cooperation to a broader and regional level).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a family of robust metasurface-oriented wireless power transfer systems with improved efficiency and size compactness. The effect of geometric and structural features on the overall efficiency and miniaturisation is elaborately studied, while the presence of substrate losses is, also, considered. Moreover, to further enhance the performance, possible means for reducing the operating frequency, without comprising the unit-cell size, are proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

The key element of the design technique is the edge-coupled split-ring resonators patterned in various metasurface configurations and optimally placed to increase the total efficiency. To this goal, a rigorous three-dimensional algorithm, launching a new high-order prism macroelement, is developed in this paper for the fast evaluation of the required quantities. The featured scheme can host diverse approximation orders, while it is drastically more economical than existing methods. Hence, the demanding wireless power transfer systems are precisely modelled via reduced degrees of freedom, without the need to conduct large-scale simulations.

Findings

Numerical results, compared with measured data from fabricated prototypes, validate the design methodology and prove its competence to provide enhanced metasurface wireless power transfer systems. An assortment of optimized 3 x 3 and 5 x 5 metamaterial setups is investigated, and interesting deductions, regarding the impact of the inter-element gaps, the distance between the transmitting and receiving components and the substrate losses, are derived. Also, the proposed vector macroelement technique overwhelms typical implementations in terms of computational burden, particularly when combined with the relevant commercial software packages.

Originality/value

Systematic design of advanced real-world wireless power transfer structures through optimally selected metasurfaces with fully controllable electromagnetic properties is presented. The analysis is performed by means of a rapid prism macroelement methodology, which leads to very confined meshes, accurate results and significantly reduced overhead. The selected metamaterial resonators are found to be very flexible and reconfigurable, even in the case of large substrate conductivity losses, whereas their contribution to the system’s total efficiency is decisive.
